5 Amazing Amsterdam Coffee Shops

And yes, I mean actual coffee shops that serve coffee, not that other substance…

Coffee shops (or maybe I should say cafes) in Amsterdam are some of the coziest. Dotted along many of the tight winding streets and canals, you can find these cafes serving up some top tier coffee with coziness and comfort as an added bonus. While we did not have a ton of time in Amsterdam, we made it a point to research some of the best coffee the city of canals had to offer and narrow it down to the top 6 we visited.

Bocca.

The first coffee shop we visited was Bocca (open in Google Maps). We ordered a simple espresso and cortado and could instantly taste the quality and punch of caffeine. And with it being the first coffee shop in Amsterdam we tried, we were impressed and it definitely increased our expectations for what the rest of the city had to offer. Bocca has a fairly large space, especially by Amsterdam standards, and with that extra space they also offer some coffee-centered workshops for perfecting your latte art at home and how to make tasty coffee cocktails. Definitely stop by if you're nearby for some delicious espresso or to grab some coffee supplies for an extended stay.

Screaming Beans

Screaming Beans’ Runstraat location (open in Google Maps) is much smaller than Bocca, but they make due with their limited space and make it a very enjoyable spot to sit and relax for a bit. They also make top quality coffee with top of the line equipment that had my coffee enthusiast brain buzzing. We were fortunate enough to have a seat, sip on a cortado, and chat with the barista about their favorite spots in Amsterdam. Coziness achieved.

Priesthood

Priesthood coffee (open in Google Maps) makes deliciously crafted espresso drinks within a book store. They have ample seating which makes it an ideal spot to chill out for a while. It is also located near Amsterdam Central train station making it an ideal first or maybe last stop before you explore other parts of town or The Netherlands.

Black Gold

Black Gold (open in Google Maps) is cool and knows it. Part coffee shop, part record store, Black Gold felt like an homage to some coffee shop in Portland or Seattle, with cool digs, dark and broody atmosphere, and of course some stellar coffee. We had a great time sitting, chatting with the barista, and skimming through their jazz and techno records. If you like coffee or music (and if you don’t I am concerned), you will for sure love what Black Gold is serving up.

Hummingbird

Hummingbird’s uber modern and chic interior is what sets it apart from the other shops in Amsterdam (open in Google Maps). We really enjoyed their lattes and cortados and were actually able to get a seat, though it is not usually available. We would recommend stopping by for a tasty cup of coffee to go, and enjoy walking the many canal streets.

Uncommon

The best coffee we had in Amsterdam was from Uncommon (open in Google Maps). A short hop, skip, and jump away from the Van Gogh Museum, Uncommon made me an immaculate latte. We were in a bit of a rush as we had a reserved time slot for the Van Gogh Museum, and once we got our coffees we rushed out. Upon taking a sip of the latte, I knew I wanted to go back after our museum visit. The latte was so velvety and the espresso was chocolatey and nutty like I love. Of course, knowing my luck, they were closed after we were finished at the museum. Take it from me, if you find yourself in the area, definitely stop by Uncommon for a coffee and some tantalizing pastries.
